NSW marine waters are home to some of the most beautiful and unique marine animals and plants in the world. From ever curious and playful dolphins to mysterious weedy seadragons living among towering kelp forests, the NSW marine environment is a magical place.

But such wonders are at risk of being loved to death. Overfishing and inappropriate use means our oceans are not as healthy as they once were, and a lack of protection means that our marine plants and animals have no place to escape from these threats.

Marine sanctuaries, the national parks of the sea, are the best way to protect these precious areas. Giving fish and marine plants have a chance to live free from human threats, they still allow people to swim, surf, sail, dive and conduct scientific research.

Scientists recommend that up to half of all marine waters should be included in marine sanctuaries yet only 6.7% of NSW waters are currently protected in these national parks of the sea.

This website is designed to help you find out more about marine sanctuaries, the national parks of the sea.
